DARKHAD DEPRESSION

Location: Khuvsgul Province, northwestern Mongolia

The Darkhad Depression is a vast wetland-rich valley in northern Mongolia, containing one of the largest freshwater systems in the country and supporting rivers, lakes, ponds, and extensive wetlands that sustain diverse biodiversity. Much of Khövsgöl Province’s taiga (boreal forest) is found here, and this forest is the traditional homeland of the Tsaatan reindeer herders (Dukha) people. It is also the only place in Mongolia where white moss, the main food source for reindeer, grows naturally.
